Hi do you teach privately online?
He dose
Thanks for asking. Here's the link for more info about online lessons: store.vonbaronmusic.com/product-category/online-drum-lessons/ That's one of my online students who commented below ❤️ Let me know if I can help 🤙
Thanks buddy ❤️
I have to admit that I've never liked long solos in any music, by any instrument, because they seem to be like a long commercial break during a radio or TV show which is distracting. In my opinion, trading 4-measure solo is ideal. The solo should not be a distraction which interrupts the flow of the song (See my disclaimer below). It should be the spice which highlights the feeling of the song. I love hearing any small group "trading fours". Your interpretation of solos is ideal. Disclaimer: I will admit that "Sing Sing Sing" by Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa is the hook that brought me into the world of drumming as a kid back in the mid-60's. But that song is unique and Gene Krupa was the perfect person to expose it to the world. This combination was the icing on the cake but I don't want an entire meal of just cake for every meal. Keep doin' what you're doin'! Your videos are always spot-on.
Great wisdom as always 🤙
What heads are you using?
The toms are remo coated ambassadors. The snare has a remo diplomat fiberskyn. Keep swinging 🤙
THAT REMO SOUND WAY BETTER I WONDER HOW THE WHOLE DRUM·SET ON THE TOMS SOUND WITH THOSE SAME HEAD I THINK IT HAD A MORE CLEAR FINE SOUND THANKS FOR THE REVIEW I MAKE LOOK INTO THESE HEADS
Not sure how they'd sound on the whole kit but they're probably decent. Keep swinging 🤙
Spectacular stuff😊
Thanks for the kind words and see you at Jazz Drum School soon!
Marvelous! Believe it or not, my digging into Gadd's (and Porcaro's) drumming on Leo Sayer's You Make Me Feel Like Dancing eventually led me to here. I was looking up N'awlins grooves since Gadd's drumming on that track is indicative of that (imo) with his relaxed feel, deep groove and tasty technique. Anyway, in my perusing, this came up. Glad it did!! :-) Deep and so very tasty! Lovely tones from drums and cymbals as well.
Thanks for the kind words my friend. Wishing you a swinging great day 🤙
Your choice of cymbals is absolutely perfect for this low volume sound. Perfect balance in every way. Many years ago, I switched from heavy bright cymbals to thin dark cymbals so that the wash would not overpower the other instruments.
Thanks man!
Hey man, always commenting on your videos really love your work. Iv been meaning to ask you something. When performing at bars, weddings, ect, how can you keep consistent music and improvisation with minimal stops? In a way where its not a "play one set piece, then the next, and the one after that", but rather a consistent "backround music" vibe, where its not over the top loud/crazy , but also not just bossa nova over and over again
Thanks for the kind words! My advice is to have a setlist and include various feel, tempos and dynamics. As one tune ends, let the piano or guitar play a little intro to start off the next one with no count in. This is typically how we do things. I hope this helps and keep swinging my friend 🤙
In all of the gigs I've played, the Bossa Nova can be played at high or low volume. For those low volume, small venues which require sensitivity, I also use a brush in my right hand (I'm right handed. Reverse this, if you are not.) to play a soft beat on the edge of the snare head along with the "woodblock" beat on the rim with my left hand. The brush most often moves laterally like a windshield wiper instead of a vertical tap. Using your imagination during the song for variety. Of course, the brush can be used on the other drums and cymbals, as well. I learned many decades ago that "less is more" and this is one of those environments which require this.
Thanks here too my friend for the wisdom!
Man this is heavy
If you need help with Latin and Brazilian beats I hope to see you at Jazz Drum School: jazzdrumschool.com/course/bossa-nova-drum-beats Keep groovin' 🤙
First, I love the shirt! If you play for any adults who like to dance and know how to dance correctly, you definitely need to learn this. It really isn't that hard but when I switched from rock to jazz in the late 60's, I only knew "2 and 4". Switching over was hard until I found a professional jazz drummer. Hint: If you've ever watched Charlie Brown's Christmas Special, you've listened to 3/4 with Jerry Granelli on drums, playing "Skating" and "Christmas Time is Here".
Thanks man for sharing your wisdom!
Nice..
Thanks always Page!

Brilliant as always Von Baron. I will add that vamp solos are more easily digestible for the customers in the jazz club. An actual drum solo can push their tolerance!
Gosh, I couldn’t agree more! Thanks for sharing your experience here and keep swinging my friend 🤙

Wait. Where's the 4 measure long, 32nd note linear drum fill? Are you sure you're a drummer? Pure magic, love the dynamics!
LOL! 😂 Lately, I feel like I’m the counter balance to all the busy drumming out there. I guess I’ve been there and filled up every measure with notes, so feel, space, phrasing and dynamics are infinitely more satisfying for me these days. Keep swinging my friend 🤙
Great and useful tools. Thanks for sharing. 🎉

Hahahaha
Hello, I would like to ask you about the bass drum lifter, I use a 16 x 16 inch bass drum, and I currently do not use the lifter, I like the sound like that. What do you think, have you tried it? thank you very much for your videos.
Thanks for the question and for watching the video! I have tried it without the bass drum riser but a 16-inch drum is a little bit small for me to play that way. The reason is because the beater strikes so close to the rim of the drum that it doesn’t give much tone. I find that on smaller drums, a riser works really great to place the beater closer to the center. That being said, an 18-inch bass drum works really good without a riser in my opinion. The sweet spot on an 18 inch bass drum seems to be just a little bit off center which is exactly where the bass drum beater strikes without a riser. All of this of course is up to your own personal preference. I say, if you like the sound, then go for it! I hope that helps and keep swinging my friend🤙
Thank you :)
My pleasure and thanks for watching! You can learn so much more in my Brushes Mastery Course: jazzdrumschool.com/course/brushes-mastery-course I hope to see you over there too my friend 🤙

whats the name of the song? love it! and love your playing!
